"It's the People Who Accomplish the Mission"
Gen. Charles Krulak Kicks Off Leadership Conference
February 13, 2008 | 05:30 p.m. CST
Sharing some of the extraordinary leadership qualities he witnessed in Vietnam and throughout his life, UP Board Member Gen. Charles Krulak kicked off the 2008 Leadership Conference Tuesday night in Omaha.
Speaking to 420 conference participants from across the railroad, Gen. Krulak began his keynote by recalling the bravery and heroism exemplified by a young Marine in his company during the Vietnam War. The Marine, an African-American lance corporal who gave his life to save the lives of an entire company, embodied what Krulak said is the ultimate quality of leadership – selflessness.
"It was the first time in my life that I understood what leadership really was," he said. "The memory of that lance corporal has been by my side in every leadership position I've had ever since."
Krulak went on to explain why leadership is so important, whether on the battlefield, in a boardroom, or in a rail yard. He shared with the group 11 lessons on leadership, learned through decades spent commanding troops, advising presidents and leading companies.
UP employees, he said, are the reason for the railroad's success.
"The reason I like Union Pacific so much is because it's so much like the Marine Corps. This company believes it's the people who accomplish the mission."
Asked about the competitive landscape facing the railroad industry, Gen. Krulak encouraged conference participants to worry less about what competitors are doing and keep them worrying about Union Pacific.
"At the end of the day, leaders inspire ordinary people to do extraordinary things. The rest will take care of itself."
UPOnline will continue to cover the 2008 Leadership Conference. Gen. Krulak's presentation will be posted on the Employees site next week as part of the conference cascade process. Stay tuned for more details.
