Promote Recycling Benefits Nov. 15

Employees Encouraged to Support 'America Recycles Day'

November 12, 2008 | 10:50 a.m. CST

Union Pacific employees can help promote the benefits of recycling by participating in America Recycles Day Nov. 15. Celebrating its 11th year, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products.

"We are committed to doing all we can to protect our environment and natural resources now and for future generations," said Bob Grimaila, senior assistant vice president-safety and environment. "For example, we have made great strides in fuel conservation thanks to programs such as Fuel Masters, Fuel Conservation Speed 50 and Reduced Engine Idling.

"As part of our stewardship focus, UP Center has implemented a single-stream recycling program to make it easier to recycle paper, plastic, cardboard and other materials. And, UP is looking to expand recycling at field locations. On Nov. 15, we encourage all UP employees and their families to consider recycling some items they otherwise wouldn't. You might be surprised at how much trash you can keep out of a landfill in just one day, and at how easy it is to recycle."

Paper recycling hit an all-time high in the United States in 2007. The 54.3 million tons of paper recovered equals about 360 pounds for every man, woman and child in America, according to the American Forest & Paper Association.

Conversely, recycling rates for beverage containers (aluminum, plastic and glass) have fallen from a high of 31 percent in 1995 to 22 percent today, according to the Container Recycling Institute. This is despite thousands of curbside recycling programs implemented during that period.

Top 10 items to recycle, according to the National Recycling Coalition:

  1. Aluminum
  2. PET plastic bottles
  3. Newspaper
  4. Corrugated cardboard
  5. Steel cans
  6. HDPE plastic bottles
  7. Glass containers
  8. Magazines
  9. Mixed paper
  10. Computers

Protecting the environment is part of everyone's job – reduce, recycle and reuse.
