Quick Actions Save a Life

October 10, 2008 | 09:55 a.m. CDT

A recent drive to work was anything but normal for Lou Hernandez, safety reporting specialist, Omaha, and his wife Patricia, a substitute teacher, when they passed a house with smoke coming out a window.

The Hernandezes stopped and peered inside to see smoke enveloping the room. Lou immediately called 911 while Patricia pounded on the locked front door, unsure if anyone was inside. The steel, dead-bolted door prevented Lou and Patricia from gaining entry.

The fire department and paramedics arrived on the scene. After four blows, the door surrendered and firefighters entered the home, finding a barely conscious man unable to move from his bed. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

The Hernandezes' quick actions clearly saved a life.
