Rail Fatalities Up Slightly in First Half

Preliminary figures released by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) show railroads reported 391 fatalities in this year's first half, up 1.6 percent from the first half of 2007, reports Railway Age.

The biggest increase was in trespasser deaths, which rose 15.9 percent to 241. Fatalities at rail-highway crossings declined 20.5 percent to 128. There were 13 employee fatalities, compared with five in last year's first half.

Total accidents and incidents in January-June 2008 declined 8.1 percent from the same period last year, to 5,947. Train accidents were down 6.4 percent to 1,205. The number of collisions increased 8.4 percent to 90, while derailments declined 8.9 percent to 876. Yard accidents were down 4.2 percent to 644.

Track causes were responsible for 422 train accidents in this year's first half, down 7.5 percent from the 2008 period; equipment causes for 164, even with last year and signaling causes 21, up 23.5 percent. Human factors were blamed for 408 accidents, down 14.8 percent.

KCS Acquires Mexico Intermodal Facility

Kansas City Southern announced March 8 that it acquired the Puerta Mexico intermodal facility at Toluca in the State of Mexico. Later this month, Kansas City Southern de Mexico, S.A. de C.V.
