Join CONAH

Celebrate Native American Heritage

April 20, 2009 | 02:00 p.m. CDT

The Council of Native American Heritage (CONAH) is inviting employees systemwide to join its newly formed employee resource group.

CONAH is a network of UP employees who are either of Native American heritage or who have an interest in its culture, with a desire to promote full inclusion of Native Americans in the workplace and communities. Membership is open to all UP employees.

In 2006, a small group of Native American employees in Omaha wanted to celebrate their heritage in a public venue, coinciding with national Native American celebrations held each November. This was done through week-long activities including historical displays, luncheons with traditional native menus and famous Native American guest speakers from the community. In late 2008, the group joined the ranks of other formal employee resource groups (BEN, LEN, LEAD and others), and is recognized and endorsed by Union Pacific.

Annual membership fees are $25. Proceeds allow the group to pursue its goals such as recruitment, scholarships, community support activities, and training and professional development for its members.

In Omaha, the group meets the third Friday of each month over the lunch hour. A conference phone line is provided for those located across the system or who otherwise cannot attend in person.

Employees can visit CONAH on the Employees site to learn more.
