Train Accidents Down 27 Percent in Four Years

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, U.S. railroads reported 2,001 train accidents in the first 10 months of 2008, down 11.1 percent from the same period in 2007 and a 27.3 percent decline from the 2,754 accidents reported in the corresponding period in 2005, reports Railway Age.
Collisions were down 2.4 percent from 2007 and 29.7 percent from 2005. Derailments declined 11.5 percent from 2007 and 11.4 percent from 2005; yard accidents were down 6.1 percent from 2007 and 28.1 percent from 2005.
Rail-highway crossing fatalities in the January-October 2008 period were down 17.7 percent from the prior year and 17.4 percent from 2005. Trespasser fatalities were up 5.6 percent from 2007 and up 4.5 percent from 2005.

KCS Acquires Mexico Intermodal Facility

Kansas City Southern announced March 8 that it acquired the Puerta Mexico intermodal facility at Toluca in the State of Mexico. Later this month, Kansas City Southern de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) will add direct train service from Lazaro Cardenas to Puerta Mexico, providing Mexico City import and export shippers with a service alternative. More...
