Employee Resource Groups Celebrate Diversity
July 1, 2009 | 11:35 a.m. CDT
UP's employee resource groups are joining forces with other Omaha-area companies in the city's first Diversity Week, celebrating diversity and inclusion.
A kick-off celebration on June 29 began the week-long festivities, featuring various speakers, including Chairman Jim Young and Barb Schaefer, senior vice president-Human Resources. The following Tuesday, more than 100 individuals attended a day-long workshop, "Developing the Next Generation of Multicultural Leaders." It focused on career development and strategies for young professionals to transition successfully into the corporate environment, and for business leaders to retain diverse talent.
The celebration continues today with a roundtable discussion led by Gloria Puentes, vice president strategic partnerships-Diversity Best Practices. It is designed to bring together community leaders and encourage dialogue about the long-term vision for a diverse and inclusive business community.
Diversity Week concludes July 2, when employees from participating companies will give back to the community, visiting veterans at the local Medical Center and planting flowers at the veteran's home.
