STB: Class I Workforce Smaller in June

According to the Surface Transportation Board's (STB) most recent employment data, as of mid-June the Class I railroad workforce stood at 149,614, representing a 1.3 percent decrease from mid-May's level and 8.5 percent drop from June 2008's count, reports Progressive Railroading.

Transportation (train and engine) ranks numbered 55,434, declining 1.7 percent from mid-May's level, but down 17.5 percent from June 2008's count. Maintenance of Way equipment and stores employees totaled 28,619, down 2.3 percent month-over-month and 5.4 percent year-over-year. Maintenance of Way and structures ranks numbering 35,382 posted the lowest month-over-month decline at 0.2 percent, while executives/officials/staff assistants totaling 10,047 registered the lowest year-over-year drop at 0.02 percent.
