New Withholding Tables (4/30/09)

New withholding tables implemented in April 2009 may reduce the amount of income tax withheld from your monthly pension payment.

The new tables, prescribed by the Department of the Treasury, reflect the Making Work Pay credit and other changes resulting from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. These tables were implemented in our payroll system in April 2009 but were effective in February 2009. Therefore, payments issued in May may see a retroactive reduction in the amount of income tax withheld back to February. Payments in future months will automatically reflect the new IRS tax withholding tables.

Please note that this ARRA tax credit that is being paid through the change in the withholding tables is not available to pension income. However, the withholding tables used for active wages and pension payments are the same. This change may put you in a tax paying position in April 2010 unless you file a new W-4P changing your withholding elections. You may wish to consult your tax advisor for further information regarding this tax change.

New ePayroll System (1/5/09)

Retirees using ePayroll should be aware that effective Jan. 5, 2009, their online self-service functionality will change with Union Pacific’s conversion to new finance and accounting systems called SAP.

SAP replaces the former TALX ePayroll system currently used to deliver the majority of retirees' payroll information. With an Employee ID and password (format noted below), retirees can access the new SAP ePayroll to:

  • View, print or save a copy of their 2009 paystubs.
  • View, print or save a copy of their W-2 or 1099R.
  • Review or change their W-4 withholdings.
  • Sign up for direct deposit or change current direct deposit bank accounts.

With this new system, retirees will be able to designate their funds to a primary and up to three secondary accounts with banks, brokerage firms or credit unions.

Users should change their ePayroll bookmarks to retirees.www.uprr.com/sap. This URL will take you to the SAP ePayroll page to learn more about the new system and access the SAP portal to perform all of the activities outlined above.

To review paystubs and W-2s for pay periods prior to Jan. 1, 2009, users should continue to access the existing TALX ePayroll system at epayroll.theworknumber.com/up or via the link on the SAP ePayroll page at retirees.www.uprr.com/sap
